CommonSpirit Health and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center have signed a nonbinding letter of intent for a CommonSpirit subsystem in eastern Ohio to integrate into UPMC.
The subsystem is Trinity Health System, which has two hospitals in Steubenville, one in Dennison and one in St. Clairsville that opened earlier this year.
According to an Oct. 15 release, CommonSpirit and Trinity Health System leaders started a search early this year to identify a regional health system “that could enhance the services and clinical offerings of Trinity Health System.”
“The intent is to keep high-quality health care sustainable and locally available not only for today but for the future generations,” the organizations said in the release.
Over the next several months, CommonSpirit and UPMC will work toward a definitive agreement. No other details of the potential deal were released.
UPMC is a nonprofit health care provider and insurer with more than 40 hospitals and 800 outpatient sites in Pennsylvania, New York and Maryland, as well as a presence overseas.
UPMC and Trinity Health System have a 20-year-plus history of collaboration, they said in the release. This includes partnering on oncology and orthopedic services.
