A Reminder
A quick reminder as a follow-up to our distribution of Striving for Excellence in Ethics in mid-August.

In order to further advance "excellence in ethics," we invite ministry ethicists, ethics committees, and mission leaders who do and/or oversee ethics to consider the following:

  • Contribute tools that they have found to be helpful that can be included with the other tools on the CHA website. The goal is to put together a robust library of tools that can be accessed by all those doing ethics within the ministry.
  • Contribute, also for posting or linking on the "Excellence in Ethics" section of the CHA website, curricula for ethics committee and ethics consultation team education, and online modules or PowerPoints for implementing the curricula.
  • Volunteering to conduct a 12 – 18 month study on the effectiveness of Striving for Excellence in Ethics. Systems and facilities from across the ministry are invited to participate. What this would entail is conducting the "assessment" that is part of the resource, developing a work plan that addresses the results of the assessment and some of the opportunities for improvement, conducting the assessment again at six months with adjustments to the work plan if necessary, and again at 12 months and 18 months, and writing up the results at six, 12, and 18 months. Findings from across the ministry will be reported in an article or articles and may be presented at a future CHA Assembly and/or meeting of the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities.

If you are already engaged in this type of effort or intend to do so, it would be helpful to let us know at CHA. We would like to be able to get a sense of whether Striving for Excellence in Ethics is making any difference and, if so, how and why.

CHA members may download a PDF of the resource on the member portion of the CHA website at www.chausa.org.

Please contact Ron Hamel at [email protected] or Tom Nairn at [email protected] regarding any of these.

The release of this resource provides an opportunity for all of the ministry to redouble our efforts to truly make strides in achieving excellence in ethics in our organizations.
