Virtua Health said it will acquire Trinity Health's Camden, N.J.-based Lourdes Health System. A definitive agreement was announced on June 5.
The acquisition will include Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center in Camden; Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County in Willingboro, N.J.; Lourdes Medical Associates and Lourdes Cardiology Services. A Trinity Health spokesperson said the health system still will have a presence in New Jersey after the acquisition.
Virtua is a southern New Jersey nonprofit health system that includes hospitals in Marlton, Mount Holly and Voorhees. It also includes Virtua Medical Group, eight urgent care centers, surgery care and fitness centers, long-term care, home health and more.
Virtua said the combined organizations will offer tertiary and community care through a clinically integrated network. David Kindlick, chair of the Virtua Board of Trustees, said in a press statement, "Virtua and Lourdes offer complementary services. Bringing our organizations together creates a more fully integrated network offering greater access and care options for our patients. It just makes good sense."
Dr. Reginald Blaber, president of Lourdes Health System, said in a statement that Virtua's approach to care completely aligns with that of Lourdes Health System.
The sale is subject to federal, regulatory and state approval and a target closing date was unavailable. The systems have not said whether Lourdes hospitals will seek to maintain a Catholic identity after the acquisition.
