St. Vincent's HealthCare of Jacksonville, Fla., opened a $110 million, 64-bed hospital in Middleburg, Fla., Oct. 1. St. Vincent's Medical Center Clay County is located about 30 miles southwest of Jacksonville, where St. Vincent's has two hospitals.

St. Vincent's of Clay County has an emergency department with 12 adult beds and four pediatric beds, six operating rooms and an imaging center. Every room in an intensive care unit will have audiovisual telemedicine linkages. An adjacent medical office building will open by the end of the year.

According to information from St. Vincent's of Clay County, prior to the opening of the hospital, about 50 percent of Clay County residents left the county to seek inpatient and outpatient medical care. St. Vincent's built the facility so patients could access health care services close to home. The population is increasing in Clay County, and so the hospital's site plan has been designed to expand to up to 250 beds.

St. Vincent's held a fund-raising campaign to support the hospital's construction, and it exceeded its $10 million goal.

Blain Claypool is president of the new hospital. He formerly was chief executive of Renown South Meadows Medical Center, Reno, Nev.
