The Carondelet Foundation of Tucson, Ariz., has received a $4.5 million donation to bolster the support services it provides to people who need palliative care and hospice services.

The gift is from the estate of Winifred Q. Witt, a Tucson philanthropist who died in September 2010. She was the widow of a Tucson builder and contractor who died in 1987.

Witt had several friends and acquaintances who'd received care through Carondelet Hospice and Palliative Care, and "the experiences of her friends moved her to designate her gift" to go to that program, said Dana Wier, marketing, communications and special events director for Carondelet Foundation.
