SSM Health Care has opened an $84 million, 50-bed hospital in Janesville, Wis., about 40 miles southeast of Madison, Wis.
The new St. Mary's Janesville Hospital is on a campus with the newly rebuilt Dean Clinic, a practice owned by the privately held Dean company. One of the country's largest integrated delivery systems, Dean is 95 percent owned by physician shareholders, and 5 percent owned by SSM Health Care.
The hospital offers cardiology, emergency services, general surgery, obstetrics, oncology, orthopedics, neuroscience, women's care and other services. It is a sister hospital of SSM's St. Mary's Hospital in Madison and St. Clare Hospital in Baraboo, Wis.
Kerry Swanson, president of St. Mary's Janesville, said SSM built the hospital because the community lacked inpatient care. She added that Janesville has an aging population and so demand for health care services is expected to rise.
She noted that the hospital's opening provides a needed hiring boost to Janesville, which was the home of a General Motors assembly plant that closed around 2009, leaving many jobless. Some of the former autoworkers retrained and now work at the new campus.
