Prayers Advent Reflections

Sunday

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 29
Isaiah 63:16b-17, 64:2-7; Psalm 80; 1 Corinthians 1:3-9; Mark 13:33-37

"Watch!" Jesus commands us in the Gospel of Mark on this First Sunday of Advent. But what are we watching for? Too often, Advent becomes a time of watching for the best Christmas sales or anticipating a calendar filled with parties.

Jesus continues: "Watch, so that you may be ready and not miss the Lord's coming." Who is this Lord? He is the Prince of Peace, the Incarnate One who brings heaven to earth. Can the Prince of Peace enter the messiness of our world today? Yes! When we prepare through acts of peace – kind words, respect, patience, compassion, and small, good deeds – we reduce violence in our world and make way for the Lord.

Watch and prepare! We do not want to miss the Prince of Peace among us as we again celebrate His coming at Christmas. The time is now. Watch! Do not miss this time of preparation for the coming of the Lord, the Prince of Peace.

Pause

As I watch and wait during these four weeks of Advent, how will I practice nonviolence and prepare my heart for the Prince of Peace to come again?

Pray

God of the Universe, Creator of Light and Dark: You have formed us together as one body to proclaim Your peace. Draw us beyond our own narrowness to recognize Christ within ourselves and one another. Help us to choose unity - humility over pride and patience over anger. Make in us Your dwelling place, O God, that we may be worthy builders of Your Kingdom and true instruments of Your grace. Amen.
