When two patients of California's Northridge Hospital miss graduation due to hospitalization, staff bring the party to them

Colleagues at Dignity Health — Northridge Hospital Medical Center in California celebrate eighth grade graduation with Christopher Sandoval. He missed his school’s ceremony while hospitalized.
Thanks to staff at a CommonSpirit Health hospital in Southern California, two teen patients who missed their graduation ceremonies still got to celebrate the milestone.

A child life specialist and colleagues on the pediatric unit at Dignity Health - Northridge Hospital Medical Center created joyful ceremonies in the hospital rooms of 14-year-old Christopher Sandoval and 17-year-old Azeneth Escobar.

Child life specialist Morinsola Keshinro created graduation certificates, brought in gifts and balloons and organized the celebrations, and Dr. Richard Kang, pediatric intensive care unit medical director, provided graduation caps.

Northridge Hospital had admitted Sandoval as a trauma case after he was hurt in an e-bike accident. He missed his eighth-grade commencement, but enjoyed the in-room party that staff held for him June 11. His mother and grandfather joined staff at the ceremony. Staff say Christopher's mother was especially grateful for the care he received at Northridge's pediatric trauma unit. Christopher has since been discharged.

Northridge Hospital patient Azeneth Escobar marks her high school graduation with caregivers and others. Hospital team members organized a special ceremony when she missed her school’s commemoration while an inpatient.

The hospital admitted Azeneth after she was left disoriented and unable to walk after an incident at an amusement park. She was distressed about missing her high school graduation while an inpatient, so the Northridge team organized a replacement ceremony with a diploma and gifts to celebrate her milestone. The ceremony took place June 10. She has since been transferred to Northridge's acute rehab unit.

Hospital staff say the ceremonies brought smiles, lifted spirits, and Azeneth was brought to tears and her mood improved. The families were emotional and very thankful, staff say.
