December 4
In today's Gospel, Jesus talks about rock and sand, listening and doing.
If you're building a house, rock is the way to go. But I love being at the beach. I love the sun, the water, and yes, even the sand. I love listening to the sound of small waves lapping and the roar of big waves breaking. I know the sand will wash away, but listening gives me hope.
Advent is both its own time and points to something else. It’s a time of entering darkness, and listening and waiting in hope. We wait in confidence in darkness because the light is coming. Advent points us to Incarnation, the Light of the World, and the Reign of God. In the Incarnation, we are given the foundation of rock on which to place our hope.
In today's Gospel, Jesus is calling and telling us to listen to his words and then act on them. His words are the light that we know is coming. What words do we hear and then speak? Words of compassion and comfort. Words of peace and justice. Words of healing and restoration. Words of joy and faith.

Pray
God, who is hope, shine Your light in our darkness so that we may continue to build Your kingdom. Let us be reflections of Your brilliance, always working to make Your goodness known. In Your Holy Name we pray, Amen.
