Prayers Advent Reflections

Thursday

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 17
Genesis 49:2, 8-10; Psalm 72; Matthew 1:1-17

"Justice shall flower in his days, and profound peace, till the moon be no more." (Psalm 72:7)

Imagine a world where justice flourishes and peace abounds; what a wonderful world that would be! Today’s Psalm reminds us justice and peace are not just nice Christian sentiments but hopes God holds dear for the human family. God expects that justice and peace will be known in our world and that we will work to achieve them. While there are many ways we can ensure justice in the workplace through policy and practice, the flourishing of justice can begin with us. The way I receive and treat other people, even in small interactions, can build up the presence of justice in our world. Peace, too, can begin on an individual level. When I feel my temper rising, a momentary pause and prayer can be the difference between added tensions or peaceful disagreements. Justice can flourish and peace abound, especially if each of us recognizes they must begin with me.

How will I enhance justice and peace at home, at work, and in our world?

Pray

God of the Universe, Creator of Light and Dark: You have formed us together as one body to proclaim Your peace. Draw us beyond our own narrowness to recognize Christ within ourselves and one another. Help us to choose unity – humility over pride and patience over anger. Make in us Your dwelling place, O God, that we may be worthy builders of Your Kingdom and true instruments of Your grace. Amen.
