Prayers Advent Reflections

Sunday,

December 14 — Gaudete Sunday

The Gospel for the Third Sunday of Advent emphasizes hope in Jesus's identity and mission, even amidst doubt and suffering. While John the Baptist is in prison, although a man of strong faith, he is questioning Jesus's identity and is looking for reassurance. His question, "Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?" reveals a moment of doubt. Jesus's response, focusing on the works he is performing, points to his identity as the Messiah and the nature of his kingdom: one of healing, restoration, and good news for the poor. The passage, particularly John's doubt and Jesus's response, offers hope in difficult times. How beautiful is this message for we who are involved in carrying out Jesus's healing mission amid the darkness that pervades our world? It reminds us that even when facing uncertainty or questioning, Jesus's works and promises offer a foundation for faith and hope. When John seems to be losing hope, Jesus tells him to look at what he hears and sees in his works.
