Prayers Advent Reflections

Monday - Feast of Saint Andrew

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 30 | FEAST OF SAINT ANDREW
Romans 10:9-18; Psalm 19; Matthew 4:18-22

As we reflect on the readings for the Feast of St. Andrew the Apostle, two aspects about St. Andrew from the wisdom of St. John Henry Newman are most helpful. The first pertains to the efficacy of Jesus' words. Newman points out that throughout salvation history, "God's word . . . effects what it announces."1 This is evident in the reading from St. Paul and in the Gospel, where Jesus says, "Come after me," and Andrew follows. Second, to respond to the words of Jesus brings His presence and His peace.

On hearing John the Baptist proclaim, "Behold, the Lamb of God," and the call of Jesus along the shore, Andrew finds what he seeks: the Messiah and Christ's inner peace. Newman writes:

"What want we more than His Presence? Andrew 'findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto Him, We have found the Messias.' What can we need beyond finding Him? Can we gain more than Him any where? Shall we be thankful, shall we be dutiful, shall we be believing, if we leave Him?"2

How can my words sow the presence of Christ and His peace within me and in others?

Pray

God of the Universe, Creator of Light and Dark: You have formed us together as one body to proclaim Your peace. Draw us beyond our own narrowness to recognize Christ within ourselves and one another. Help us to choose unity – humility over pride and patience over anger. Make in us Your dwelling place, O God, that we may be worthy builders of Your Kingdom and true instruments of Your grace. Amen.
