Prayers Advent Reflections

Monday

MONDAY, DECEMBER 7
Isaiah 35:1-10; Psalm 85; Luke 5:17-26

Parched land, frightened hearts, burning sands: these are not exactly images that denote a kingdom of peace. However, in today's first reading, Isaiah continues: "Parched land exults… frightened heart be strong, fear not…burning sands become pools!" So why this transformation? Isaiah puts it simply: "Here is your God…he comes to save you."

Indeed, God does save us! In today’s Gospel a paralyzed man and his devoted companions encounter Jesus, "who saw their faith." They hear: "As for you, your sins are forgiven" (Luke 5:20). We do not know the details; their souls may have been like parched land or burning sand, but they all experienced profound healing peace!

According to the hymn, "Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me." How does peace begin with me? It is turning to Jesus, honestly addressing the parched land of sin in my life, the dry grass of regret, the frightened heart of past abuse, the burning sands of vengeance, and the thirsty ground of bias. We might need the assistance of companions who carry and lower us into the awaiting arms of Jesus. I think of countless people who carried me: a priest, a therapist, a friend and my spouse.

We can build a kingdom of peace in our communities when we name the individuals who help carry us through parched land. In your own life, who carries you through parched land?

Pray

God of the Universe, Creator of Light and Dark: You have formed us together as one body to proclaim Your peace. Draw us beyond our own narrowness to recognize Christ within ourselves and one another. Help us to choose unity – humility over pride and patience over anger. Make in us Your dwelling place, O God, that we may be worthy builders of Your Kingdom and true instruments of Your grace. Amen.
