Prayers Advent Reflections

Monday

MONDAY, DECEMBER 21
Song of Songs 2:8-14 or Zephaniah 3:14-18a; Psalm 33; Luke 1: 39-45

As we draw nearer to the end of our Advent journey, we are invited to attend to the interior building of a Kingdom of Peace within our own hearts. How do I cultivate a stable disposition of peace within my heart? What are the obstacles to my heart's peace – those of my own choosing and making?

One of the optional readings for this Monday of the Fourth Week of Advent offers wisdom and encouragement in our endeavor to be a person of peace:

"Arise, my beloved, my dove, my beautiful one,
and come! O my dove in the clefts of the rock,
in the secret recesses of the cliff,
Let me see you, let me hear your voice…"
(Song of Songs 2:10b, 14a)

Embracing one's belovedness before God is the source of abiding peace. You are God's beloved: these words of Song of Songs, long seen as an intimate conversation between God and the soul, are said to each of us personally.

As God’s beloved, how am I being invited to be a person of peace?

Pray

God of the Universe, Creator of Light and Dark: You have formed us together as one body to proclaim Your peace. Draw us beyond our own narrowness to recognize Christ within ourselves and one another. Help us to choose unity – humility over pride and patience over anger. Make in us Your dwelling place, O God, that we may be worthy builders of Your Kingdom and true instruments of Your grace. Amen
