WASHINGTON, DC – In case you missed it, a new poll released this week found that a majority of voters – including 78% of those who voted for President Donald Trump – support Medicaid and oppose cuts to the program.

The poll found that:

  • Medicaid has a 75% favorability rating, while only 15% have an unfavorable view of the program.
  • An overwhelming majority (88%) support Medicaid, while only 10% oppose it.
  • A clear majority oppose (57%) Congress cutting the amount of money states receive from the Medicaid program because it is too big, even if that means hospitals and doctors are paid even less for treating Medicaid patients.
  • There is strong support for increasing funding for Medicaid from both Democrats (73%) and Independents (42%), while the plurality of Republicans want to keep it the same (45%)

The polling, conducted in battleground congressional districts and commissioned by Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System, underscores the widespread popularity of Medicaid across the political spectrum. Voters made clear that they not only want Medicaid protected but also support strengthening the program and increasing benefits for patients.

As pollster Jim McLaughlin pointed out, “Voters clearly want Congress not only to protect Medicaid, but they will reward those who strengthen Medicaid and increase benefits to patients.”

This polling reinforces what Catholic health providers have long known: protecting Medicaid is not only good policy but has broad support across the political spectrum in the United States.
