In an effort to assist immigrants in Stark and Tuscarawas Counties, Mercy Medical Center in Canton, Ohio, attempts to provide culturally-sensitive health care, particularly in Latino neighborhoods. In addition to training bilingual volunteers as interpreters for the Spanish-speaking community, Mercy also coordinates transportation, prenatal and postpartum care for immigrant women and their newborns. A ministry of the Sisters of Charity Health System, it is supported through grants from the Sisters of the Humility of Mary and the Sisters of Charity Foundation of Canton. It also provides outreach to Union Hospital, Dover, Ohio, and Omni Orthopedics and Oasis Surgery Center both in Canton. The program is a best practice and has been recognized as such by the Ohio Hospital Association and the Stark County Minority Health Coalition.
