Colleague, collaborator, friend and mentor. Jack was one of the giants in Catholic health care and Catholic health care ethics. He was profoundly committed to the mission of the Catholic health ministry and eloquent in speaking about it. Gifted with a keen intellect and a creative imagination, Jack was wont to stretch the thinking of his colleagues about such matters as the locus of responsibility for ethics in our organizations, the three realms of ethics, "next generation" ethics committees, hiring for leadership, the need for and approach to health care reform. His was a passionate voice for justice, especially for the uninsured. In all of this he was gentle, yet persistent. He was patient and humble. He modeled for us all what it means to be an ethicist and how to do ethics.
