Never too early to learn the pleasures of a good book

Child reading

Four-year-old Abigail Salonus peruses a picture book with her Essentia Health Clinics pediatrician Jane Winter as part of the nationwide Reach Out and Read initiative. During well-child visits at Essentia Health Clinics in the Brainerd Lakes area of central Minnesota, every child from 6 months to 5 years gets a free book; and their parents get encouragement to read aloud to their children. At Essentia, the Reach Out and Read book giveaway is funded in part by the foundation of Brainerd, Minn.-based Essentia Health – St. Joseph's Medical Center.
