Two families give $1 million apiece to Providence Little Company of Mary Foundation in Torrance, Calif.

The Providence Little Company of Mary Foundation of Torrance, Calif., has received donations of $1 million apiece from two families in Southern California. The gifts will benefit Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center's cardiology program.

The foundation identified the donor families, both from South Bay, Calif., as Stanley and Maureen Moore and the Scharffenberger family. The Moores said they made their donation because they have an emotional connection with the hospital — their four children and five grandchildren were born there — and because they admire Little Company of Mary physicians who have treated them. The Scharffenberger family said they donated to Providence Little Company of Mary because clinicians saved a family member's life in 2012.

The two families' gifts will go toward an enhanced electrophysiology suite, a hybrid operating room for cardiac and endovascular surgeries and more catheterization laboratory space.
