Avera acquires CHI's South Dakota facilities

Sioux Falls, S.D.-based Avera Health acquired two hospitals and four long-term care facilities in South Dakota from Catholic Health Initiatives Jan. 1.

With the sponsorship change, the 60-bed St. Mary's Healthcare Center of Pierre, S.D., became Avera St. Mary's Hospital; and the 10-bed Gettysburg Memorial Hospital of Gettysburg, S.D., became Avera Gettysburg Hospital. The long-term care facilities — two apiece in Pierre and Gettysburg — also added the new owner's name to their moniker.

Englewood, Colo.-based CHI had no other facilities in South Dakota. Avera has a multi-practice medical clinic in Pierre and four regional medical centers and other facilities in South Dakota.

The organizations would not disclose the monetary terms of the sponsorship transfer.
