Accounting chapter updated in CHA's community benefit guide
CHA has updated accounting guidance in its community benefit resource, A Guide for Planning and Reporting Community Benefit, to align with instructions in the IRS Form 990, Schedule H for Hospitals. Guideline 8 in Section 4.2 of the guide now says that zero net community benefit expense should be reported to the IRS for any community benefit category where offsetting revenue exceeds total community benefit expense. Earlier guidance had said that gains should be reported to the IRS in these situations.

The HFMA website has a report on the first revocation of a hospital's not-for-profit status under 501(r) rules. The HFMA update notes that while industry advisers are split over whether more such status revocations are coming, all expect expanded enforcement.
Resources to address opioid addiction epidemic
The Center for Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, has just released "Hope & Healing," a toolkit that organizes a wide array of resources that faith and community leaders can use to help their communities deal with the opioid addiction epidemic.
CHA is also examining this issue – through Catholic Health World articles and a webinar on Nov. 8 that looks at ways hospitals can help their communities address this health crisis.
Resources on addressing the social determinants of health
The following groups have recently released resources on how health care organizations can address the social determinants of health. Links to these resources have also been posted on CHA's social determinants webpage.
The recent issue of Build Healthy Places Network's online magazine features an essay on how Catholic health systems like Dignity Health and Bon Secours Health System partner with community development financial institutions (CDFIs) to invest in low-income neighborhoods to improve health.
The Urban Institute has released a study examining emerging interventions that integrate housing and health services for low-income people, with a focus on interventions where health care organizations have taken a significant leadership role.
The American Hospital Association has recently released several resources to help hospitals better understand their role in addressing the social determinants of health. These resources focus on hospital-community partnerships, food insecurity and housing.
Health Care Without Harm has released a report that summarizes findings from a survey investigating how hospitals organize community benefit activities and how they include food insecurity, healthy food access and diet-related disease in their community health needs assessments and implementation strategies.
ChangeLab Solutions and Moving Health Care Upstream have released resources on local and institutional policy strategies that hospitals can use to address the root causes of asthma and food insecurity on a community-wide scale.
A recent report from the Deloitte Center for Health Solutions documents the results of a survey of about 300 hospitals and health systems exploring how the social determinants of health affect patients' long-term well-being and what health care organizations can do to address these challenges.
Better Care Playbook
The Institute for Healthcare Improvement's Better Care Playbook is a free curated compilation of information and resources on promising approaches to improve care for patients with complex health and social needs. The resource provides its target users — health system leaders, insurers and policymakers — access to key information in one place.
Midwest Forum on Hospitals, Health System and Population Health
Registration is now open for the The Midwest Forum on Hospitals, Health Systems and Population Health: Partnerships to Build a Culture of Health. This meeting, to be held Nov. 29 – Dec. 1 in Chicago, will bring together organizations and key stakeholders dedicated to improving the health of all Americans to discuss ways to integrate clinical and community health and prevention strategies. RWJF Culture of Health Prize 2018 call for applications now open
The RWJF Culture of Health Prize is an annual competition recognizing communities that have placed a priority on health and are creating powerful partnerships and deep commitments to provide everyone with the opportunity to live well. Prize communities will receive $25,000, have the opportunity to share their story and lessons learned with the country and join a national network of past winning communities. Application deadline is Nov. 3, 2017, 3 p.m. ET. Visit the RWJF website for more information.
Call for proposals for 2018 ACHI annual meeting
ACHI is now accepting proposals for its 2018 annual meeting to be held March 14-16 in Atlanta. The conference will focus on how to build bridges – between people, organizations, sectors – to improve population health. Proposals are due Sept. 25, 2017. Visit the ACHI website for more information.
