UnityPoint Health to acquire MercyOne hospital in Sioux City, Iowa

UnityPoint Health system plans to acquire the 464-bed MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa. The organizations have signed a letter of intent, and they expect to close the deal this summer.

Siouxland Medical Center is a Catholic nonprofit facility that is part of MercyOne. MercyOne, which is a Trinity Health subsystem, has 21 medical centers and 23 additional affiliated health care facilities, most in Iowa.

UnityPoint Health is a nonprofit health system that includes 17 regional hospitals, three health colleges and a network of outpatient sites across Iowa, western Illinois and southern Wisconsin. In Sioux City, UnityPoint Health has a medical center with 189 staffed beds, UnityPoint Health — St. Luke's.

UnityPoint's acquisition of Siouxland Medical Center would include all the medical center's facilities — the hospital, physicians' practices and home care services. Specific details about the acquisition, such as on the financial aspects, were not available as Catholic Health World posted this story.

A press release said the deal's intent is to strengthen local health care through nonprofit leadership, "enhancing services and providing stability for patients and team members."

Bob Ritz, MercyOne CEO, said in the release, "We strongly believe the best way to maintain access to care in Sioux City, to become sustainable long-term and to ensure a smooth transition for patients and employees is for UnityPoint Health to acquire MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center."
