In our last update we reported that CHA, the Association of American Medical Colleges and the American Hospital Association had submitted a letter to the IRS urging the agency to consider efforts to improve housing as community benefit. At the request of the IRS, the three organizations prepared a letter which provides links to studies and research strongly supporting the position that housing is essential to promoting and sustaining good health and should be counted as a community benefit activity in Part I of the IRS Form 990 Schedule H when undertaken by tax-exempt hospitals.
Community Catalyst Resource on Hospital Billing
A new resource from Community Catalyst, What Does the Affordable Care Act Say about Hospital Bills?, outlines the key elements of the final regulations implementing provisions in the Affordable Care act related to patient billing — financial assistance, charges, billing and collections. The resource also provides guidance to help community-based organizations, consumer advocates and state and local policymakers as they assess where additional engagement with local hospitals and hospital associations, advocacy to advance further local or state public policies, or a combination of both approaches might best serve patients and the public in the communities they serve.
What Really Makes Us Healthy?
The Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco has released a four minute video that makes the case, in plain English, for aligning community development and health improvement efforts to improve long-term health and life expectancy. Consider sharing with your boards, executive leadership and community partners as well as through your social media channels.
Culture of Health: Breakthrough Leaders in Nursing award – accepting applications
The Campaign for Action is now accepting nominations for its new Culture of Health: Breakthrough Leaders in Nursing award. The award honors nurse leaders who are actively working with diverse populations to build healthier lives and communities. Each awardee will receive national recognition and a leadership scholarship from the Center for Creative Leadership designed to maximize their potential for the future. Applications are due Aug. 21. Public Health and Faith Community Partnerships
Emory University's Interfaith Health Program (IHP), in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Association for State and Health Territorial Officials (ASTHO), has worked to develop a program to build and mobilize capacity within networks of faith-based and community organizations to demonstrate ways to expand reach to vulnerable, at-risk and minority populations for prevention and treatment of influenza.
