    Timeline for the Vision 2020 Process

    In 2009, the CHA Board of Trustees charged CHA executive leadership to develop a Vision that would describe the preferred future for Catholic health ministry in the United States in the year 2020, in the context of what we believe the environment will be. This preferred future vision will address the following ELEMENTS:

    • who will be served;
    • the services that will be provided;
    • how they might be organized;
    • the roles of governance and sponsorship;
    • formation of lay leaders; and,
    • engagement of our communities in Catholic health ministry.

    To fulfill that charge, CHA, under the guidance of the vice president for strategic initiatives, Elaine Bauer, FACHE, began activities around this work.

    June 2009 — Vision 2020 initiative is announced by Sr. Carol Keehan, DC, at the 2009 Catholic Health Assembly.

    June and July 2009 — Members of the Catholic health care ministry completed an electronic survey that provided baseline information about member visioning around strategic planning processes as well as prioritized the factors they believe most affect services offered today compared to those they will offer in 2020.

    August 2009 — Vision 2020 Steering Committee is named.

    September 2009 — First meeting of the Vision 2020 Steering Committee and first vetting of the Environmental Scan (.pdf).

    October 2009 — Invitational gathering of key stakeholders for a Visioning Workshop in Chicago. At this event, more than 40 persons representing executives, trustees, sponsors and clinicians reviewed and updated the Environmental Scan 2020 as well as possible future scenarios from the Institute For The Future and Microsoft©. They then participated in several facilitated sessions to determine some of the aspects of a plausible scenario for 2020 and that scenario in relation to what Catholic health care will need to do in order to continue its mission.

    November 2009 — The Joint Committee Meeting focused its participants on Vision 2020. Representatives of nine of the association's administrative committees participated in the annual update and planning meeting. The group discussed what health care delivery might look like in 2020 by vetting the initial plausible scenario developed by those who attended the October workshop.

    December 2009 — Individual and group processes are initiated to provide feedback on future characteristics of the ministry.

    January 2010 — Engaged a broader stakeholder base through the use of online tools and in-person meetings to gain input into the Vision 2020 plausible scenario and characteristics of the ministry.  View a report on the feedback.

    February 2010 — Began to consolidate and focus input on Vision 2020 into meaningful, concise statements of direction.  Continued to refine the characteristics of the Vision based on stakeholder review.

    March 2010 — Outlined a draft vision statement and strategic roadmap for Catholic Health Ministries and solicited feedback from all CHA members and other important constituents.

    April 2010 — Presented the draft Vision 2020 statement and strategic roadmap to the CHA Board of Trustees for review, input, and conditional approval.

    May 2010 — Compiled a reference document and accompanying tools/resources for the Catholic Health Ministries to leverage the Vision 2020 work.  The Vision 2020 tools will serve as an outline for shaping each individual organization’s planning priorities and areas of focus.

    June 2010 — One year after the process starts, the Vision 2020 and a related toolkit are shared at the 2010 Catholic Health Assembly in Denver.

    July 2010 — The Vision 2020 toolkit is distributed widely to ministry leaders.
