Sisters of Mercy donate open-air classroom to school

Schoolchildren at Linwood Elementary in Oklahoma City can enjoy classes, concerts and picnics in an outdoor classroom donated by the Sisters of Mercy this spring.

Mercy Health Center in Oklahoma City sponsors the school, donating supplies and talent. Of the school's 340 students, 56 percent are Hispanic, and 94 percent receive free lunches. Mercy associates began tutoring Linwood students in 2005. The following year, the sisters and the associates in the system donated a playground. Plans call for Mercy to help Linwood apply for grants to build a walking track.

Mercy is part of Sisters of Mercy Health System of Chesterfield, Mo.
