    BACKGROUND

    In 2009, Catholic Health Association desired to update the Competencies for Mission Leaders which were first formulated ten years ago, because of changes in the health care environment and new needs and expectations which had arisen in the Catholic health care field.

    CHA wanted competencies which would:

    1. Reflect the current and future demands of the mission role;
    2. Assure the continued effectiveness of the mission role in Catholic health care institutions;
    3. Provide a more effective tool for:
      • Structuring the mission role;
      • Hiring new mission leaders, including guidance to search firms;
      • Doing succession planning.

    CHA hired The Reid Group, a nationally known consulting and mediation firm, to facilitate the process of revising the Competencies for Mission Leaders.

    The process for arriving at the updated Competencies for Mission Leaders included:

    • December-January
      • Ten phone interviews with mission leaders and sponsors
      • 121 online survey responses from mission leaders
      • Development of a preliminary draft for consultation at St. Petersburg meeting
      • Luncheon input meeting based on the preliminary draft at St. Petersburg with about 30 mission leaders
      • Development of the first public draft
    • February-March
      • Consultation on the first public draft
      • 130 online survey responses to the first public draft from mission leaders, CEOs and sponsors
      • 2 focus group meetings in Denver with CHA advisory groups on mission and leadership
    • April-May
      • Creation of the second public draft based on input noted above
      • Two webinars with CEOs and sponsors
      • Review and critique of the second public draft from the Florida and Denver focus group participants
    • June
      • Presentation of the "near final draft" at the assembly breakfast with about 90 participants
      • Presentation of the "final draft" of the Competencies for Mission Leaders to CHA leadership
