  • Need is too great to accept defeat on health reform

As we have watched health reform clear reportedly "insurmountable hurdles," we have dared to hope that for the first time so many of our brothers and sisters would now have health insurance.

Catholic ministry responds to Haiti's crisis

The Catholic health ministry in the U.S. has joined in the immediate global response to the humanitarian crisis in Haiti, and its leaders are pledging to redouble support for Catholic hospitals and Catholic health and welfare agencies, particularly those with staff, infrastructure and established networks and services in Port-au-Prince, the capital city near the epicenter of last month's quake.

Community Cancer Centers improving care quality

A pilot program designed to improve cancer care is returning some promising results, according to program participants, and the project is demonstrating that community cancer centers can offer the type of care historically found only at elite research facilities.

    Hold the hamburgers

The health care community knows a meat-heavy diet can lead to heart disease and cancer.

Webinar to explore how best to talk about health reform

During a Feb. 16 webinar from CHA, a group of communications experts will discuss messaging strategies that work — and those that don't — when it comes to health reform.

Art unites, relaxes critical care staff at St. Joseph's

Inspiration struck Jocelyn "Joy" Espejo as she nonchalantly fingered medicine caps at the nurses' station on her unit at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center.

Bon Secours takes on executive recruiting function, reaps savings

Several years ago, administrators at Bon Secours Health System of Marriottsville, Md., noticed that when they engaged executive search firms in locating candidates for top positions, the firms often came back with names from within the Bon Secours system.

Sr. Madejczyk had a passion for mission integration

Sr. Jane Madejczyk, OSF, who served on Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare's Sponsor Member Board, died of complications of breast cancer Jan. 5 at age 63.

Exempla Healthcare replaces leaders at system and hospital level

Denver's Exempla Healthcare has replaced three top leaders who departed the system after a new governance structure went into effect in mid-December.

Sr. Phelan, chaplain, ethicist had career in Via Christi network

Sr. Nora Phelan, CSJ, died Jan. 16 of complications that arose after she had surgery for an aortic aneurysm. At the time of her death, she was a chaplain at Via Christi Regional Medical Center of Wichita, Kan.

St. Joseph staff and youth group give gift bags to kids in need

The mission committee and other staff from St. Joseph Health Center of Warren, Ohio, worked with a church's youth group last month to create 40 "comfort gift bags" for Warren-area elementary students to enjoy around Martin Luther King Day.
