Hospital community health needs assessments confirm news and
research findings that communities across the country are in the midst of an
opioid addiction epidemic. A recent CHA survey of its member hospitals’ needs
assessments found that substance abuse was identified as a high priority need
among the majority of survey respondents. As hospitals develop their
implementation strategies and work with community partners it is important for
them to understand the factors that have led to the crisis and what
interventions work.
Dr. Andrew Kolodny, co-director
of opioid policy research at the Heller School for Social Policy and
Management at Brandeis University, provided webinar participants with an overview of the
epidemic and then discuss effective community interventions, including what
needs to be in place to make those interventions successful, and government
policies that can help or hinder these treatment efforts.
Objectives:
The purpose of this webinar was to:
- Explain the factors that led to the opioid addiction
epidemic and why it has been so difficult to address
- Describe effective prevention and treatment
interventions, including public policies
- Identify key partners that hospitals should work with to
carry out interventions
