A webinar to inform and inspire your
organization and staff to reconsider their use of and philosophy about
water. World Water Day, annually on March 22, and the season of Lent
provides an opportunity for those working in Catholic health care to consider
how personal behavior and organizational processes and culture around water can
create positive impact felt around the world.
An Unfortunate Fact
Health care organizations are consistently among the top
water users in their communities — at a time when the EPA reports at least 36
states are anticipating local, regional or statewide water shortages by 2013
(even under non-drought conditions) and the cost of water is rising; over the
past five years, U.S. municipal water rates have increased by an average of 27
percent. Our water use cannot be viewed in isolation because the use of water is
the U.S. has a ripple effect on our global neighbors – especially low-resource
countries.
Our Call
Catholic social teaching tells us that water is not a commodity to be bought
and sold, but instead, a human right—the most necessary of God’s given
resources. Catholic health organizations are called to steward resources wisely,
promote and defend human dignity, promote the common good and act on behalf of
justice—all things tied to the commoditization of water. We have a mission
imperative to address water issues here and overseas.
During this one
hour event, the presenters provided the ethical and moral case for wise
water stewardship as well as initiatives making a difference today in health
care to best steward this precious resource.
