The USCCB approved a revision of Directive 58 of the ERDs
at the meeting of the bishops’ conference in November, 2009. In the
context of Directive 58 and the ERDs, presenters Dr. Ann Allegre and Rev.
Gerald Coleman considered both the clinical and theological/ethical dimensions of
medically administered nutrition and hydration. Issues addressed included: For whom
and under what circumstance are medically administered nutrition and hydration
indicated? What can it achieve and not achieve? How ought we think about
medically administered nutrition and hydration theologically and ethically in
light of a revised Directive 58?
