CHRISTUS completes $335 million restructuring of Corpus Christi campuses

September 15, 2019

CHRISTUS Health has completed a five-year, $335 million project to restructure services and renovate facilities at two of its campuses in the Corpus Christi, Texas, region: CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital — Shoreline and CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital — Memorial.

CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital – Shoreline in Corpus Christi, Texas, hosts a grand opening event for its tower in the spring.

Dr. Osbert Blow, president and chief medical officer of CHRISTUS Spohn Health System, said CHRISTUS made this — its largest-ever investment in a single project — because it anticipates future growth in South Texas and is committed "to remaining the health care leader here for years to come."

The project updated the Shoreline campus with a new tower, consolidated the inpatient services of the Shoreline and Memorial campuses to Shoreline and converted Memorial into an outpatient facility.

CHRISTUS opened the new North Tower at Shoreline in the spring. It includes an emergency department with 55 exam rooms. The tower also houses the region's only Level II trauma center. Prior to the project it was a Level IV center. The North Tower project added 200 patient beds to Shoreline. Previously, Shoreline and Memorial had a combined 419 beds. Shoreline now has "about 400," according to information from CHRISTUS.

In January 2017, CHRISTUS finished converting Memorial into the Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Family Health Center. That ambulatory care site offers primary and preventive care, laboratory services, a pharmacy and other services.

As part of the broader project, CHRISTUS also expanded primary care offerings elsewhere in South Texas.
