A continuum-of-care facility in Johnston, Iowa, became part of the eldercare division of Catholic Health Initiatives on July 1. The Bishop Drumm Retirement Center previously was a subsidiary of Mercy Medical Center — Des Moines of Des Moines, Iowa.
Leaders of the organizations involved in the deal said they expect the ownership change to provide additional expertise, resources and the benefits of national contracting to Bishop Drumm.
The former parent organization, Mercy Medical Center, is a four-hospital organization that is affiliated with and owned by CHI. Mercy Medical Center — Des Moines is a member of the Mercy Health Network, an integrated system of hospitals and health care facilities jointly sponsored through CHI and Trinity Health of Livonia, Mich. The Bishop Drumm facility will remain "tightly aligned" with Mercy Medical, according to information from Englewood, Colo.-based CHI. CHI said it is not disclosing financial terms of Bishop Drumm's ownership change.
According to information from CHI, Bishop Drumm will retain its name but now will use the branding and logo of CHI Living Communities, which is the eldercare division of CHI. In addition to Bishop Drumm, CHI Living Communities comprises four senior living campuses in Colorado.
Bishop Drumm is made up of independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing and dementia facilities. The organization houses about 300 residents and employs about 250 staff members. Among Bishop Drumm's residents are members of two congregations of women religious, the Sisters of Mercy of Omaha, Neb., and the Congregation of the Humility of Mary of Davenport, Iowa.
Johnston is about 10 miles northwest of Des Moines.
