St. Peter's in eastern New York merges its Troy hospitals

March 1, 2019

On Jan. 1, St. Peter's Health Partners of Albany, N.Y., merged its two Troy hospitals, Samaritan Hospital and St. Mary's Hospital. The move completes a transition begun around 2011, when St. Peter's Health Partners formed through the combination of three systems and set forth plans to consolidate inpatient care and reduce bed counts in Troy.

St Peters
The brick building shown at center right in this architectural rendering opened in September at Samaritan Hospital, Troy, N.Y.

The St. Peter's system resulted from the merger eight years ago of:

  • St. Peter's Health Care Services, which operated St. Peter's Hospital, a Catholic facility in Albany
  • Seton Health, which operated St. Mary's Hospital, a Catholic facility in Troy
  • Northeast Health, which operated two non-Catholic hospitals: Samaritan Hospital in Troy and Albany Memorial Hospital in Albany

In Troy, St. Peter's has consolidated all inpatient services to Samaritan Hospital and converted St. Mary's Hospital into an outpatient satellite of Samaritan Hospital. St. Peter's invested $105 million into these changes, this includes construction of a five-story patient pavilion at Samaritan Hospital to modernize that campus. The building opened in September.

As the outpatient campus, St. Mary's has a cancer care unit, endoscopy suite, lab services, medical imaging, an opioid detoxification program, a school of nursing, a sleep center, urgent care unit and women's imaging center. Its only inpatient services are in a 20-bed chemical dependency rehabilitation unit.

The Troy facilities' transition has involved the movement of inpatient beds. When the three systems merged in 2011, Samaritan Hospital was licensed for 212 beds, and St. Mary's, for 196. Currently Samaritan has 277 beds, including the 20 at St. Mary's, which now is considered a division of Samaritan. (One hundred and thirty-one beds were removed from the Troy facilities' operating certificates.)

According to information from St. Peter's, St. Mary's will retain its Catholic identity. It now is called "Samaritan Hospital — St. Mary's Campus."
