CommonSpirit subsystem in Kentucky rebrands as 'CHI Saint Joseph Health'

March 1, 2019

A CommonSpirit Health subsystem serving central and eastern Kentucky is rebranding to reflect its restructuring and the unwinding of a merger the organization had completed in 2012.

The Kentucky entities were part of Catholic Health Initiatives, and that parent organization now has combined with Dignity Health to form CommonSpirit. CommonSpirit is keeping in its Kentucky portfolio eight hospitals, a clinically integrated network and a medical group that now will be called "CHI Saint Joseph Health." It no longer will use the "Kentucky-One Health" name.

KentuckyOne was created in a merger between Jewish Hospital & St. Mary's HealthCare of Louisville, Ky., and Saint Joseph Health System of Lexington, Ky. CHI had sponsored both systems prior to the merger and retained its sponsorship role after the organizations joined together. For a time, the University of Louisville Hospital and the related James Graham Brown Cancer Center were part of KentuckyOne by virtue of a joint operating agreement. That agreement was dissolved in December 2016.

In mid-2017, KentuckyOne announced plans to divest of nine of its facilities — most of them in Louisville — and to retain the eight in central and eastern Kentucky.

CHI transferred ownership of one of the KentuckyOne facilities slated for divestiture — Saint Joseph Martin, in Martin, Ky. — to Appalachian Regional Healthcare in June 2017. And, for over a year CHI has been in negotiations with BlueMountain Capital Management — a New York-based private asset management firm — on the sale of the nine Louisville-area facilities. Mary Branham, CHI Saint Joseph Health market director of communications, says the potential sale of the behavioral health facility Our Lady of Peace may be part of the BlueMountain negotiations as well.

In a press release, CHI Saint Joseph Health says it is rebranding the legacy Saint Joseph facilities to put their rich heritage front and center and to renew their commitment to the "caring and innovative legacy of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth," who founded the Lexington-area facilities.

CHI Saint Joseph Health has introduced a new logo that it says represents trust, confidence, integrity and energy. The system says that focusing on central and eastern Kentucky operations through the restructuring will better position it to continue to provide quality patient care and improve health and wellness in Kentucky.

The organizations that are part of CHI Saint Joseph Health are:

  • Saint Joseph Hospital, Lexington
  • Saint Joseph East and its Women's Hospital, Lexington
  • Saint Joseph Berea, Berea, Ky.
  • Saint Joseph Jessamine, Nicholasville, Ky.
  • Saint Joseph London, London, Ky.
  • Saint Joseph Mount Sterling, Mount Sterling, Ky.
  • Flaget Memorial Hospital, Bardstown, Ky.
  • Continuing Care Hospital at Saint Joseph
  • CHI Saint Joseph Health Partners clinically integrated network
  • CHI Saint Joseph Medical Group

These organizations will retain their individual names.
