Dignity Health Sequoia Hospital held a grand opening for its new $275 million pavilion on its Redwood City, Calif., campus in May. New construction has doubled the number of beds to 208. The pavilion houses the hospital's Heart and Vascular Institute, the Center for Total Joint Replacement, a hybrid cardiac catheterization suite and operating rooms.
The existing hospital and emergency department is being remodeled, in part to meet California's seismic requirements, the hospital said in statements about the project. The hospital has remained open during the work, and the new facilities will be open to patients later this summer.
The four-story pavilion adds about 148,000 square feet and 104 new beds to the hospital. The ground floor of the pavilion includes eight operating room suites, including a hybrid operating room, which allows for imaging and surgery in one location; eight pre-op beds; 12 recovery beds and a 16-bed intensive care unit. The first floor houses six cardiovascular and interventional suites, an eight-bed staging area, a 24-bed cardiac surveillance unit and a six-bed operating recovery unit. The second floor contains a 32-bed clinical service unit and the third floor has a 32-bed medical surgical unit.
Hospital leaders said the construction will accommodate advanced medical and information technology now and in the future; it allows for larger, private rooms with space for family to visit or stay overnight; and it provides new consult rooms, to facilitate private communication between physicians, patients and families.
The design takes advantage of natural light, and special flooring reduces noise. Sequoia Hospital replaced three-fourths acre of pavement with landscaping as part of the project. The hospital said the campus incorporates energy and water-saving features.
