Establishing a Palliative Care Program in Long-Term Care
Establishing a formalized palliative care program involves three critical pieces: providing education, using a team approach and assessing for the five domains of pain (physical, social, familial, psychiatric and emotional pains). It involves caring for the whole person, not just his or her physical needs. In this webinar, Sr. M. Peter Lillian Di Maria, O.Carm., who is director of the Avila Institute of Gerontology, will describe the model of care being implemented by the facilities sponsored, co-sponsored or served by the Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm. Too, she will discuss how to achieve a sustainable Palliative Care program in long-term care including best practices and overcoming barriers.
