Institute for Diversity — October Diversity Dialogue: Health Equity, Disparities Resolution, and Workforce Experience
The Institute for Diversity's October Diversity Dialogue features Navicent executives who will present the business case for health disparities resolution and attainment of health equity. They will also describe how improvements in health equity can add value to the organization by improving demonstrable quality and reducing costs. November is National Native American Heritage Month
Native American Heritage Month recognizes the histories, invaluable contributions and livelihood of American Indian and Alaska Native people in the United States. During this observance, the HHS office of Minority Health (OMH) helps to raise awareness of health disparities. Institute for Healthcare Improvement: IHI National Forum on Quality Improvement in Health Care

The Institute for Healthcare Improvement's "National Forum on Quality Improvement in Health Care," will take place Dec. 9 – 12, 2018, in Orlando. This year's agenda features a variety of sessions and tracks including the Equity track, which offers sessions on improving access, quality and health outcomes with communities that have been systematically marginalized based on characteristics historically linked to discrimination or exclusion. From May to June 2018, the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention Research Centers together with the Association of the State and Territorial Officials hosted an Ask the Experts webinar series. Audio Recording — Institute for Healthcare Improvement: Lowering Readmissions, Reducing Disparities
As part of reducing avoidable readmissions, health care organizations are exploring how social determinants of health affect the frequency of rehospitalizations. On Oct. 25, 2018, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement broadcasted a discussion about evaluating and addressing these determinants to prevent readmissions. Listen to the recording.

National Academies of Sciences — Immigration as a Social Determinant of Health: Proceedings of a Workshop
A workshop held by the Roundtable on the Promotion of Health Equity, Nov. 28, 2017, titled Immigration as a Social Determinant of Health, explored the complex interactions between immigration and health disparities. Topics of the workshop included discussing the history of immigration and the relationship of immigration status to economic and health policies, the ongoing importance of immigrant health outcomes in the United States and the role of immigration as a social determinant of health. Institute for InterGroup Understanding News — Racism is the Toxin That Triggers Far Too Many Preterm Births in America: New Powerful Data Presented for California Births
Medical science has long known that stress for mothers increases the incidence of premature birth. This media commentary for the Institute for InterGroup Understanding confirms the article by Danyelle Solomon, who makes the argument that racism in our country is a key generator of stress, and racism-triggered stress needs to be understood to find a solution for premature birth problems. National Academy of Medicine: Stat! An Action Plan or Replacing the Broken System of Recruitment and Retention of Underrepresented Minorities in Medicine
This discussion paper by the National Academy of Medicine addresses the issue of underrepresented minorities in medicine and how innovative methods and tools are needed to address institutional barriers, build a sustainable pipeline of interested and qualified professionals and bolster the self-perception of underrepresented minority youth. Read the Discussion Paper.

National Institutes of Health: 2018 Research Conference on Sleep and the Health of Women
The National Institutes of Health hosted the 2018 Research Conference on Sleep and the Health of Women, Oct. 16 – 17, 2018, which showcased a decade of federally-funded research advances in understanding health risks, societal burden and treatment options associated with sleep deficiency and sleep disorders in women. Researchers and the public presented and discussed the state of the science regarding sleep and the health of women, the limitations to implement what is already known and the opportunities to translate scientific findings into practice and routine care.
