Overview

In response to member requests, CHA is offering a special pre-assembly program for CEOs, sponsors and new and current board members about effective governance of Catholic health organizations as a ministry of the Catholic Church.

The pre-assembly program will take place Saturday, June 4 from 1:30- 5:00 p.m. and Sunday, June 5 from 8:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., immediately prior to the start of the annual Catholic Health Assembly, June 5-7, at the JW Marriott Orlando, Grande Lakes. The timing provides an ideal opportunity to attend both events in a premier resort environment while saving time and money on travel expenses.

In addition to clarifying the distinctive roles of governance and sponsorship, participants will examine principles of Catholic social teaching, building effective relationships with bishops and understanding key ethical principles and the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Services.

There will be ample opportunity for networking and dialogue with fellow CEOs, board members, sponsors and colleagues.

This program is open to CEOs, board members and sponsors who attend the assembly as well as those who prefer to participate only in the pre-assembly event. CEOs and board members of ministry organizations are welcome to participate as a group as part of their board formation. All participants are invited to a special joint reception with Tomorrow’s Leader Honorees on Saturday, June 4 at 5:30 p.m. at the end of the program sessions on Saturday. The program concludes at 11:45 a.m. on Sunday.

Objectives

After attending this program, participants will be able to:

  • Operate more effectively as trustees of a ministry of the Catholic Church.
  • Describe fundamentals of governance specific to Catholic health care.
  • Distinguish the responsibilities of sponsorship, governance and management.
  • Apply principles of Catholic social teaching and tradition to the role of a trustee of a Catholic health ministry.
  • Identify ways of preserving Catholic identity while enhancing collaboration and partnering with other-than-Catholic organizations.
  • Describe the responsibility of Catholic health care and the role of trustees to carry out the ministry’s commitment to a just health system that provides quality care for everyone.
