Steven H. Woolf, MD, MPH, is director of the Virginia Commonwealth University Center on Society and Health and Professor of Family Medicine and Population Health at Virginia Commonwealth University.  He is board certified in family medicine and in preventive medicine and public health. Dr. Woolf has published more than 170 articles during a career that has focused on promoting the most effective health care services and on advocating the importance of health promotion and disease prevention and the need to address the social determinants of health. In addition to scientific publications, he has emphasized outreach to policymakers, the public and the media to raise awareness about the factors outside of health care that shape health outcomes. Dr. Woolf was elected to the Institute of Medicine in 2001.
