  • Mission leader ponders spirituality walking the Way of St. James

Assisted by little more than a good pair of athletic shoes and a wicking T-shirt, Catholic Health Initiatives' Vice President of Mission Integration Luke Larson, joined by his wife Evie, walked 500 miles in 48 days across the Camino de Santiago de Compostela to the burial place of St. James.

Organizational ethics could put ministry ahead on health reform

Health care reform is expected to have an impact on virtually every aspect of the nation's health care delivery system. Providers are beginning to plan how best to meet the promises and challenges of health care reform, and ethicists say that organizational ethics should be part of this conversation.

AWARE builds self-esteem and coping skills in adolescents overcoming behavioral health challenges

More than 60 percent of the population of Passaic, N.J., is Latino. Many families hail from Chile, Peru, Ecuador and other South American countries as well as Mexico. The poor, urban city also has a sizable Ukrainian and Orthodox Jewish population.

Hospice caregivers tune into special needs of veterans

Phyllis Hill, a hospice social worker, was visiting a 90-year-old patient for the first time. They made polite small talk in his living room. Hill asked if he'd been in the military.

Mercy geriatric assessment program provides dementia care, family support

Roy Hopkins of Morristown, Tenn., began manifesting signs of vascular dementia at age 66, shortly after open heart surgery in 1995. He started dragging his left foot, developed significant mood swings and experienced memory loss.

    Denver's St. Anthony opens hospital

St. Anthony Central Hospital has completed construction of a $435 million replacement hospital six miles away from its Denver location. That facility moved most of its operations to the new campus in Lakewood, Colo., in June.

USCCB launches website to mark Sept. 11

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has launched a website to share individuals' remembrances of Sept. 11, 2001, and to offer resources for people who want to reflect on the 10th anniversary of the deadly terrorist attack against the U.S.

Provena Mercy in Aurora, Ill., marks centennial

Provena Mercy Medical Center in Aurora, Ill., is celebrating its 100th anniversary with a gala, monthly tributes, an online memory book and video.

Ministry members recognize food insecurity as a growing concern

During the recession, the nation has seen food prices rising just as pocketbooks are tightening. As a result, increasing numbers of Americans are going hungry.
