Trustees of Catholic health ministry need to understand important trends in the health care industry and governance as well as trends in sponsorship and governance that are specific to the Catholic health ministry. This session will address a broad range of trends common to the health industry in the U.S. It will also address important developments in Catholic health care that have implications for the role of the board.
   
9:00-9:45 a.m. Extending God's Work through Board Leadership
Brian Yanofchick
Application of Catholic social teaching and the tradition and principles of Catholic health care to the complexity of today's business model requires much of those entrusted with the governance of these institutional works. This session will provide grounding in Catholic social teaching, sacramentality, and Catholic imagination as essential, distinctive elements - a unique perspective on the world - that must shape decision making by boards of Catholic health care as those continuing Jesus' mission of health and love today.
   
9:45-10:30 a.m. The Trustee's Role and Responsibilities

Continuing to develop effective and focused trustees is one of the main challenges facing Catholic health care boards. As organizations respond to change and new opportunities, trustees must understand the scope of their responsibilities to provide oversight and leadership in key areas. Participants will learn how board and management roles differ, and gain insights for building constructive relationships. We will also focus on the fiduciary, strategic and generative work of the Board.

10:45-11:30 a.m.  Holding in Trust: Stewardship of the Ministry
Sr. Patricia Talone, RSM, Ph.D.
Those governing Catholic health care are entrusted with shepherding a ministry of the church, not just overseeing the work of a business. As such, trustees must learn to define their role as an expression of the larger ministry of the Church. This presentation will address the board's role as a steward of this ministry, defining the unique implications for governance in a Catholic setting. Included in this presentation will be a discussion of the board's role in nurturing a just workplace, supporting health care as a vocation, maintaining a core commitment to the poor and vulnerable, and orienting the health system's strategic planning to truly address community needs.
   
11:30-12:15 p.m. Strategy

Complexity, financial strain and demands for new levels of accountability require motivated, knowledgeable trustees who understand how to think and lead strategically in today's demanding environment. To compete successfully in the health care marketplace, board leaders must be able to help executive management assess and respond to community need, adapt and innovate in the ministry and in the business of care. This session will explore practices for ensuring that the strategic planning effort establishes a true vision for the future of the organization.

1:30-2:30 p.m. The Board and Mission Imperative: Quality and Patient Safety
John Combes, MD
Providing excellent clinical outcomes is an obvious goal for health care institutions and systems and is a fundamental of Catholic health care. Trustees are learning that it's not only the right thing to do; it's the pathway to competing successfully in the future. What is the role of a governing team that is not directly involved in the clinical side of the business? This session will offer suggestions about setting the organizational tone, selecting the "right" indicators to measure progress and numerous other factors to which the board should be attentive.
   
2:30-3:45 p.m. The Responsibility of Boards of Trustees for the Ethical Integrity of the Organization
Ron Hamel, Ph.D.
While not directly involved in clinical decisions, trustees bear responsibility for the ethical organization, both clinically and in business practices. The USCCB's Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services provides a roadmap of sound religious and ethical practices for Catholic health care. This session will provide an overview of the directives and offer resources for continued board development regarding its role as corporate citizen, employer and provider.

4:00-5:00 p.m. Levers of Effective Boards - Structuring to Accomplish the Board's Work

Is your board structured to make efficient decisions to advance the ministry? Are its agendas organized to best use the time and the talents of its trustees? Through effective board leadership and the development of a governance plan, participants will learn how to create a board structure that keeps its members engaged, enabling the board to accomplish its work most productively.

8:15-9:45 a.m. CEO Evaluation and Talent Management
David Nygren, Ph.D.
How can boards work most effectively with the health care CEO? This presentation will address how the board can work most effectively with its CEO to set goals, evaluate performance, and provide constructive and timely feedback. How total compensation is tied to performance review will also be explored. Similarly, it discusses how boards that have had smooth, effective CEO turnover processes complete their work. From setting the tone to partnering with the incumbent CEO regarding this potentially sensitive process to candidate identification to techniques for monitoring the depth and quality of the candidate pool, participants will hear how successful boards approach this important job.

10:00-11:00 a.m. Governance Assessment: Improving Board Performance
David Nygren, Ph.D.
Having a process for board assessment is important and can greatly improve trustee development and the overall effectiveness of the board consistent with Catholic competencies. This session will highlight key tools a health care board should use to evaluate and improve its performance, and how the evaluation process can be used to drive continuous improvement and add greater impact within the organization.
   
11:00-Noon Integration and Personal Development Plan
This session provides an opportunity to assess new learning with a team of experts and colleagues. Focus will be upon the individual trustee's responsibility to evaluate his or her personal competencies and challenges as a board member of Catholic ministry in order to enhance competencies needed to build strong, mission-based Catholic health care. This presentation will introduce participants to resources that are available to help create a learning plan for individual and board development.
