    September 1, 2009 Volume 25, Number 15

  • Our vision: Health insurance coverage for all in the United States

The public reaction to the health reform bills that emerged prior to the August congressional recess was swift, loud and often based in misinformation.

Reformers ponder how to promote healthy living

As lawmakers consider how to reform the health system, serious consideration is being given to ways to encourage people to adopt healthier habits.

Saint Joseph's mines the many talents of its sponsors

Sr. Barbara Gnecco, SC, is something of a "Jill of all trades." She's been a teacher and a mental health case manager. She helped start a shelter for runaways. She's run a soup kitchen and a hospital's dietary unit.

Downturn straining charity care system, say leaders

Virtually every sector of the U.S. economy has been affected by the economic recession, and health care is no exception.

Some Medal of Freedom winners have familiar faces to ministry members

The august group accepting the 2009 Medal of Freedom at a White House ceremony last month included Nancy G. Brinker and Dr. Pedro José Greer Jr.

Saint John's Health Center connects to community with media art wall

Nonprofit hospitals strive to build meaningful connections with the communities they serve; and, in so doing, they come to reflect the sensibilities of the locals.

Keck center opening completes replacement hospital

As Catholic Health World went to press, Saint John's Health Center is completing a $499 million construction project that includes the Howard Keck Center and the Chan Soon-Shiong Center for Life Sciences.

St. Vincent's clears legal hurdle in bid to build hospital in Clay County, Fla.

St. Vincent's HealthCare in Jacksonville, Fla., received a favorable ruling from the First District Court of Appeal in Tallahassee, Fla., in July in a case challenging the health system's plans to build a hospital in Clay County, Fla.

Trenton's St. Francis starts up LIFE, New Jersey's first PACE program

St. Francis Medical Center in Trenton, N.J., has started offering coordinated care services to seniors through Living Independently For Elders, the first Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly in New Jersey.

St. Joseph's Mission Hospital acquires South Coast Medical

Mission Hospital of Mission Viejo, Calif., has acquired South Coast Medical Center of Laguna Beach, Calif., in a move that Mission administrators said would promote the stability of both the hospitals and their communities.

Sr. Karam to head St. Vincent Charity, Ross to serve as COO

As part of an ownership restructuring under way at three Sisters of Charity Health System hospitals, Sr. Judith Ann Karam, CSA, will serve as president and chief executive of St. Vincent Charity Hospital of Cleveland; and Joan Ross will serve as the facility's chief operating officer.

Community Health Partners helps poor women prepare for motherhood

Preparing for a new baby can be challenging for any mom-to-be, but for low-income, single women who haven't yet gotten their footing, getting ready for a new arrival on their own can be daunting.
