  • Love is essential to application of Christian ethics in health care

Catholic hospitals that take a legalistic approach to ethics are missing the point of faith-based care, according to Br. Daniel Sulmasy.

Holy Cross ER suits sensory-challenged seniors

Entering a hospital emergency room can be an unnerving experience for anyone.

Ministry gives public a dose of reassurance on flu strain

Catholic hospitals around the U.S. are stocking masks and flu testing kits, meeting with staff and taking a stance of heightened alert against an outbreak of H1N1 influenza, a new virus commonly known as swine flu.

Hospice of the Gorge reaches migrant families

No, fresh rattlesnake blood would not cure the patient's cancer. But hospice nurse Josie Castañeda did not mock the question. Nor did she forbid her patient, an elderly Mexican immigrant, from trying folk remedies. Castañeda only asked to be informed if such treatments were used.

CHA honors Vatican's Sr. Sharon Holland, IHM, for service to ministry

CHA leaders are expressing their deep gratitude to Sr. Sharon Holland, IHM, for her commitment to U.S. religious congregations and their ministries.

CHI pursuing transfer of St. John's to Mercy

Denver's Catholic Health Initiatives is negotiating the transfer of St. John's Regional Medical Center of Joplin, Mo., to Sisters of Mercy Health System of Chesterfield, Mo.

Benedictine to build skilled nursing facility in Bismarck, N.D., by 2010

In mid-April, Benedictine Living Communities of Bismarck, N.D., began construction of a skilled nursing facility that will house 24 transitional care beds and 48 long-term care beds.

    Trinity to leave Franciscan system

By the end of the year, Trinity Medical Center of Brenham, Texas, plans to separate from its parent company of 20 years, Franciscan Services Corp. of Sylvania, Ohio.

Provena Saint Joseph opens patient tower with all-private rooms

Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, Ill., has opened a $144 million, eight-story patient tower with all-private rooms.

Avera to use grants of $13.5 million to bolster rural and cancer care

Avera Health of Sioux Falls, S.D., will use the $13.5 million it received recently from a charitable trust to improve rural health care and to enhance the cancer services it offers in one of its regions.

    Nurse receives blessing

UPMC Mercy of Pittsburgh Chaplain Fr. Joe Markalonis blessed the hands of nurse educator Kathy Fleck during one of the hospital's events marking National Nurses Week.

Ministry staff aims to ease burdens on patients' 'informal' caregivers

It is common for patients who are discharged from hospitals and long-term care facilities to return home needing temporary or permanent help with medical and personal needs.
