  • Health reformers search for better care delivery models

As policy makers consider health reform, there's increasing interest in how to structure medical practices and hospital care to focus more on preventive care and on coordinating the management of chronic conditions.

Avera program gives Head Start kids, families a boost

Children whose families lack support and nurturing begin their school years at a disadvantage. A program from the Avera Research Institute here aims to close that gap and head off behavioral problems early.

Lourdes, St. Rose cited in national guide on palliative care

The palliative care programs of two Catholic health facilities are among the exemplars called out in the updated edition of the Clinical Practice Guidelines for Quality Palliative Care released earlier this year.

FoodMed explores how hospitals can serve food healthful to patients, planet

When hospitals make the decision to use local and organic foods, it is good for patients, good for local farmers and good for the planet, Dr. Preston Maring, associate physician-in-chief at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Oakland, Calif., said during his keynote speech at the Third International Conference on Healthy Food in Healthcare.

Cincinnati's Jewish Hospital to join Mercy Health Partners

Mercy Health Partners is in negotiations with the Jewish Foundation of Cincinnati to buy the 209-bed Jewish Hospital of Cincinnati for about $180 million.

Sisters of St. Joseph, Benedictine agree to cosponsor Nazareth Living Center

The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet will share sponsorship of Nazareth Living Center, their St. Louis nursing home, with Benedictine Health System of Duluth, Minn., under an agreement struck in July.

Chelsea, Mich., hospital joins Trinity's Saint Joseph

The 113-bed, nonprofit Chelsea Community Hospital of Chelsea, Mich., has merged with Saint Joseph Mercy Health System of Ann Arbor, Mich.

CHRISTUS Santa Rosa opens hospital, plans academic children's hospital

CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health Care of San Antonio has opened a 150-bed, $130 million hospital in Westover Hills, a fast-growing suburb of San Antonio.

Clean, lean workspaces save steps, lower stress at Mercy Health Center

At Mercy Health Center in Oklahoma City, Jane Lewis' official title is Lean Six Sigma Black Belt.

Ministry provides holistic support to those on the NICU roller coaster

When anticipating the arrival of a new baby, parents-to-be may fantasize about holding their healthy newborn in their arms, introducing the baby to doting family members and bringing the baby home from the hospital. For those whose babies require intensive care though, reality crashes into dreams, and families may need help adjusting.
