The Documentary — A Call to Care: Stories of Courage, Compassion and America's Health — A one-hour documentary, which is available for order on DVD, was produced by Video/Action Fund in 1996 and featured previously untold stories of a courageous group of women who helped build America's health care system. The documentary was distributed to public television stations nationwide by American Program Services (APS). Using diaries and letters as the script, the documentary combined photographs and archival footage. It was written and directed by Betsy Cox in Washington, DC.
Funding for this documentary was provided by the Connelly Foundation, Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, the Catholic Health Association of the United States, and the Raskob Foundation for Catholic Activities. A Call to Care was presented by KQED-TV/San Francisco. American Program Service, located in Boston, is a major source of programming for America's public television stations. A Call to Care received an Emmy for "Best Documentary" in awards given by the Washington, DC chapter/ Capitol Region of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. It received numerous other awards, including a CINE Golden Eagle; Gold Award, WorldFest Charleston; Gold CINDY, Association of Visual Communicators; Telly; Bronze Award, WorldFest Houston; and an Honorable Mention at the Columbus International Film and Video Festival.
