  • Saint Thomas program provides genetic screening

Terry Cole doesn't relish having to undergo a colonoscopy every year. But he knows that the alternative — waiting any longer — could cost him his life. Recently, through genetic testing, he learned that he is predisposed to colon and other cancers.

Autistic youth find job success at Bon Secours St. Mary's

Kayln Hutson, 21, has autism spectrum disorder, a speech impairment and a newly minted diploma from Hermitage High School in Henrico County, Va. She also has something many other recent high school grads these days do not — a full-time job.

Mercy Health uses coalition as 'listening post' to hear concerns of the poor

Mercy Health Partners of Muskegon, Mich., has found that its acquisition of a community health coalition several years ago is returning strong results: The relationship has enabled Mercy to forge stronger links to its community and to improve the system's ability to assess and address community needs.

Providence determined to grow ranks of its international volunteers

When U.S. clinicians travel overseas on medical mission trips, their out-of-pocket expenses — trip fees, international airfare and the cost of purchasing and transporting some of the medical supplies and equipment they bring with them — add up very quickly.

Ministry leaders explore how best to equip people for sponsor roles

CHA recently convened 21 ministry leaders to discuss how Catholic health care sponsorship is changing and how the ministry is adjusting to the changes. The conversation focused on how best to prepare emerging leaders to assume roles in sponsorship.

Mercy buys critical access hospital in Guthrie, Okla.

Mercy health system of Chesterfield, Mo., has acquired a Guthrie, Okla., critical access hospital and four clinics. The deal was completed Oct. 1.

Saint Raphael program allows for earlier detection of breast cancer

Women at high risk for breast cancer because of family or personal medical history can now be genetically tested and undergo other diagnostic screening through a new program at the Hospital of Saint Raphael in New Haven, Conn.

Joint Commission names care quality leaders in five categories

"Top Performers on Key Quality Measures," a recently published list of 405 hospitals singled out by the Joint Commission for excellence in patient care, includes 30 CHA member hospitals.

Mercy in Grayling, Mich., marks centennial

Northern Michigan's Mercy Hospital Grayling celebrated its 100-year anniversary this spring with a ceremony presided over in part by Bishop Bernard Hebda of the Diocese of Gaylord, Mich.

Detroit's St. John receives Kellogg grant

The W.K. Kellogg Foundation has awarded Detroit's St. John Hospital and Medical Center $1.2 million to promote breast-feeding, particularly among low-income and minority women.
