    March 15, 2011 Volume 27, Number 5

  • Ascension Health Care Network opens for business

Ascension Health has teamed with a private equity firm to create a new type of enterprise: an acquisitive, equity-based, for-profit Catholic health care system.

Ministry foundations feel impact of recession but foresee turnaround

The recession has put a strain on a lot of wallets, and many people who once gave generously to philanthropies have had to cut back or discontinue their giving.

CHE, Seton Hall launch Ministry Leadership Academy

In early April, a group of internal candidates for Catholic Health East's top positions will gather on a wooded estate near Philadelphia to ponder the stewardship ahead.

St. Vincent Charity promotes health literacy

Simplified signage is in the works for St. Vincent Charity Medical Center in Cleveland.

Coalition launches website to educate on health reform's benefits

A coalition including CHA launched a consumer website this month to inform people about the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

Benedictine enlists parish volunteers to keep seniors independent

Many years ago when her children were young, Lu Heiling's next-door neighbor in suburban Minnesota was an elderly woman who lived alone.

Catholic students pray for St. Mary's young patients

Pediatric patients of St. Mary's Health System of Evansville, Ind., have a powerful new support system: They're on the prayer lists of thousands of Catholic students and teachers.

Philanthropist gives second gift to St. Cloud facility

A behavioral health facility at St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minn., has received a second $1 million gift from its top benefactor.

Burbank family gives $1 million to Providence

A donation from a Burbank, Calif., family will help to equip a neuroscience institute opening in the spring at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank.

For-profit system buys CHRISTUS St. Joseph Villa

The Ensign Group of Mission Viejo, Calif., has acquired CHRISTUS St. Joseph Villa of Salt Lake City, the only Catholic, not-for-profit senior care facility in Utah.

Ministry's collections demonstrate wit, grit and devotion

Catholic health care's roots run deep in communities across the U.S., in some cases all the way back to the 1700s and 1800s.
