  • St. Joseph works to promote sacred connection with patients encounters

Telemedicine has been used in an increasingly wide variety of settings and for many different purposes. But few health care providers have tapped into telemedicine as a means to expand access to medically underserved urbanites.

St. Joseph caregivers dig deep to show authentic respect

Greeting a visitor at security, retrieving a patient in the emergency room, discharging a new mother — every moment, even the most mundane, can be imbued with the sacred.

Emory-Saint Joseph's plan preserves ministry presence

In Atlanta, the lone Catholic health care provider, Saint Joseph's Hospital Atlanta, recently capped off a two-year search for a partner or buyer to strengthen its position in the city's crowded health care market.

St. Leonard soothes Alzheimer's patients by recalling past passions, interests

World War II pilot Eugene Miller, 90, flew planes long after his return to civilian life. Though he earned his livelihood as a toolmaker, his passions — which included photographing his hometown of Dayton, Ohio, as well as flying — consumed his free time.

Ministry members among green award winners

Dozens of ministry systems and facilities were among the recipients of green awards at the CleanMed environmental conference in Phoenix in April. The annual awards from the Practice Greenhealth environmental organization honor health care providers excelling in their efforts to reduce their environmental footprint.

Hospital management company to acquire CHP's Mercy Knoxville

Health Management Associates, a Naples, Fla.-based hospital management company is in negotiations to purchase Mercy Health Partners of Knoxville, Tenn., potentially by fall.

Franciscan Services set to revive critical access hospital in Ohio

A new subsidiary of Franciscan Services Corp. has acquired Twin City Hospital, a bankrupt critical access hospital in Dennison, Ohio. The new owners plan to operate the hospital as a Catholic facility and restore and expand services cut or closed in 2010 when the hospital's financial condition was deteriorating.

    CHRISTUS restructures executive team

CHRISTUS Health of Irving, Texas, has restructured its executive team in a move that administrators said will help the system to better confront future challenges.

Mercy grant bringing health, wellness education to schools in four states

Rates of Type 2 diabetes are rising among the young. Research suggests that for the first time in U.S. history, children will live shorter life spans than their parents. One out of three kids is now considered overweight or obese.

    Team delivers diabetes information door-to-door

When Migdalia Davila's husband lost his job in 2007, the 53-year-old diabetic and asthmatic was left uninsured and unable to pay for her doctor appointments and medications.
