    About a year and a half ago, a chicken processing plant in Western Kentucky hired more than 150 Somali immigrants, with many of them settling in Mayfield, Ky. When a group of the new residents sought to open a mosque last fall in Mayfield, many townspeople objected.

    St. John's Regional Medical Center, battered by a killer super tornado that churned through Joplin, Mo., on May 22, is continuing to treat patients from a temporary facility. And Sisters of Mercy Health System has pledged to rebuild the hospital and services.

     

    As storm unleases chaos, ER staff, rescuers swing into action

    It was a peaceful Sunday afternoon at St. John's Regional Medical Center in Joplin, Mo. Nancy Nichols, an emergency room secretary, heard tornado sirens. But, in a Midwestern spring, the sirens are not all that unusual, and, before May 22, many people had grown a bit blase´ about the warnings.

    By December 2014, Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital in downtown Denver plans to complete a $623 million campus redevelopment project that will replace the current structure that was built in the 1960s with a facility designed for today's needs.

     

    Nominations open for palliative care award

    Nominations are now being accepted for the 2012 Circle of Life Award: Celebrating Innovation in Palliative and End-of-Life Care. The recognition, sponsored by the American Hospital Association, will honor up to three organizations that achieve excellence in end-of-life and palliative care.

     

    Alexian to build children's medical center on northwest Chicago campus

    Alexian Brothers Health System has broken ground on a $117 million children's hospital on the campus of the system's St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates, Ill. Slated to open in 2013, the facility will be called Alexian Brothers Children's Hospital.

    The taxi ride to Bach Mai Hospital is harrowing. Pedestrians rarely have the advantage of a stop sign or traffic light as they step off curbs and walk into an onrush of traffic, parting the motorbikes, pedicabs, bicycles, cars, buses and trucks.
