    February 15, 2012 Volume 28, Number 3

  • Something has to be fixed

CHA and its members were profoundly disappointed to learn that the definition of a religious employer was not going to be broadened in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' rules for preventive services for women.

Bishops promote ongoing dialogue with health ministry

Catholic bishops joined Catholic health care leaders in frank, structured conversations here during a program that also featured theologians and experts in Catholic canon law.

Weekly reflection time helps palliative care staff avoid emotional exhaustion

As caregivers to patients with chronic or end-stage illnesses and their families, they daily help people who may be debilitated by pain or anxiety navigate advanced care planning, end-of-life decision making and all the complex feelings that come with these choices.

Laurel House to provide safe shelter for homeless seniors

Emergency shelters are typically not set up to meet the needs of older adults. They tend to be noisy places, full of young families and utterly lacking in privacy.

SSM Health Care opens 50-bed hospital in Janesville, Wis.

SSM Health Care has opened an $84 million, 50-bed hospital in Janesville, Wis., about 40 miles southeast of Madison, Wis.

Teen volunteers help boost fund-raising efforts at Alexian system

To hear siblings Brendon and Brooke Geils talk, it makes perfect sense: healthy children raising money to help sick children.

Catholic Health Association reports financial results for fiscal year 2011

CHA has posted its financial information for the fiscal year ended June 30 on the association's website.

Ascension Health names senior leadership team

St. Louis-based Ascension Health has named executives to its senior leadership team.

Nehring was mission leader at Provena Health-Resurrection Health Care

Thomas Nehring, 58, died Jan. 20 in Albuquerque, N.M. He was recently named chief mission officer for the newly merged Provena Health-Resurrection Health Care in Chicago.

Saint Joseph opens replacement campus in Mount Sterling, Ky.

Saint Joseph Health System of Lexington, Ky., has opened a $60 million, 40-bed hospital to replace its 51-year-old facility in Mount Sterling, Ky.

Mercy assumes operational control of Carthage, Mo., hospital

Mercy health system of Chesterfield, Mo., is now operating a southwest Missouri community hospital under a 50-year lease agreement that the system said enables it to improve health care access in a region heavily impacted by a May tornado.

Surge of donations advances St. Joseph's chapel project in Tucson

An outpouring of employee and community support is enabling St. Joseph's Hospital of Tucson, Ariz., to move closer to starting its chapel construction project.
